NZ Blood Clot Foundation

Blood clots can affect anyone - even young, active and healthy people. Knowing the signs could save a life.

Introduction to Blood Clots

Blood clots are clumps of blood that have changed from a liquid to a gel-like or semi-solid state. While clotting is a normal and important process that prevents excessive bleeding, clots can become dangerous when they form in the wrong place or don’t dissolve as they should.

What is VTE?

Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) is the term for blood clots that form in deep veins (DVT) or travel to the lungs (PE). These conditions can be serious but are often preventable.

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)

DVT occurs when a blood clot forms in a deep vein often in the leg or pelvis causing pain, swelling or redness. Left untreated, it can lead to complications like post-thrombotic syndrome or pulmonary embolism.

Pulmonary Embolus (PE)

A PE happens when a clot travels to the lungs, potentially blocking blood flow. This is a medical emergency - signs include chest pain, shortness of breath or coughing up blood.

Walk for Us

Walk for Us

In August 2024 our chairman ‘Trevor’ suffered a Pulmonary Embolism and once released from hospital released that we had little of no resources available in New Zealand. Thus, the concept of the New Zealand Blood Clot Foundation.   This all-cost’s money so Trevor decided that as part of his recovery program he would walk daily and set himself a goal of walking a Marathon 42kms to raise seed money to start the foundation.

So, on Saturday the 25th of January only 4 months after a Pulmonary Embolism Trevor and his wife walked 42kms raising over $3500 to start the Charity.

You can make a difference and “Walk for us”.  5km, 10km, a half marathon or Marathon.
